Rise Light & Power is planning a comprehensive redevelopment of its Ravenswood Generating Station become a first-of-its-kind hub of renewable energy. If approved by our regulators, Renewable Ravenswood will significantly reduce New York City’s dependence on fossil fuels by transitioning legacy fossil generation to new clean energy sources.
Renewable Ravenswood represents a historic opportunity to deliver an environmental justice victory to frontline communities. The plan will also help New York State and New York City achieve their nation-leading climate goals, including achieving 70 percent renewable energy by 2030 for a cleaner and healthier community.
For nearly 60 years, the Ravenswood Generating Station has been a vital part of New York’s energy system. Located on 28 waterfront acres in Long Island City, Ravenswood proudly employs more than 100 union men and women from the greater New York/New Jersey metro region, and delivers more than 20 percent of New York City’s generation capacity. It played a major role in re-energizing the grid after 2003’s Northeast Blackout. It has continuously delivered safe and reliable service during major weather events, including Hurricane Sandy – during which it provided up to 50 percent of New York City’s energy – and others, like the recent “Polar Vortex” and “Bomb Cyclone.”
Rise Light & Power traces its origins to 1999, when a new company was formed in connection with the acquisition of Ravenswood from Con Edison. In 2017, LS Power acquired the company and committed to investing in a comprehensive redevelopment of its energy business. Since 2017, we have retired more nearly 500 MW of gas turbine peakers at Ravenswood and have matured development plans to reuse the property and grid connections formerly dedicated to the peakers to make room for new clean energy infrastructure.
In 2020, Rise began a growth-oriented strategy, including modernization and resiliency upgrades at Ravenswood, as well as new large-scale clean energy infrastructure to facilitate the renewable energy transition taking place in New York State and the region. Rise Light & Power is proud to be a wholly-owned, independently-operated subsidiary of LS Power, a development, investment, and operating company focused on the North American power and energy infrastructure sector.
